Batman & Robin in 2009 Red Bull Soapbox Race

We’ve all wanted to do it. Drive down 10th street with wild, reckless abandon. Foot firmly on the pedal. Paying no mind to pedestrians. No brakes. Just speed.

This Saturday, 36 teams will get to do just that when the Red Bull Soapbox Race returns to Piedmont Park.

For months, the teams have been creating their human-powered dream machines that will send them careening downhill towards the checkered flag, hopping over obstacles and trying not to hit hay bales along the way.

Speed isn’t the only criteria for winning. Each team will also be judged on their overall creativity and showmanship.

Back to defend their title is Beer Connoisseur Magazine, who won in 2009, crossing the finish line in their fermentation vat-mobile. Check out their winning run:

This year they’ll try to retain their title, barrelling downhill in their custom cask:

Some of the other concept cars looking to claim the 2012 prize:

SweetWater Brewery’s Troutmobile

Atlanta Rollergirls’ Racing Devil Skate

The Nook’s Drunken Astronaut Fishbowl-Mobile

Chic Boutique Tour’s Chic Racers (really looking forward to this one)

All this fun is FREE. Pits open at 10AM. Race starts at 12PM.  You’ll want to get there early to secure your spot on the sidelines. You won’t want to miss any of the action.

See a full-list of all of the teams, their vehicles as well as a behind the scenes look at the creation of each craft at Red Bull Soapbox USA.

See you there!
